The DC Masonic Foundation scholarship granted me the opportunity to become the first in my family to receive a higher education and pursue my passion. I graduated from the Columbia Heights Educational Campus in Washington, DC and became a part of the Masonic Foundation family in 2016. Thanks to the scholarship, I was able to attend the University of Michigan Ross School of Business with a focus in Strategy and Technology Operations. The scholarship enabled me to have an enriched collegiate life with the means to wholeheartedly focus on my study and immerse myself in campus community and extracurriculars. For one of my extracurriculars, I served as a Pre-Calculus, Calculus, Technology Operations, and Writing Tutor to help first-generation low-income students in similar situations to mine. My curiosity followed me after Michigan as a Senior Data and Analytics Technology Consultant at Ernst & Young (EY). I am thankful to be a Michigan 2020 Alumna and am grateful for the DC Masonic Foundation and their support of me.
This scholarship helped me finish my first year of college debt-free as a first-generation college student. Through receiving this scholarship, it also gave me the comfortability to allow me to transfer to Temple University with very little debt when my previous school’s cost of attendance became too much after my first year, helping me to be the first generation of college graduates from a 4-year institution in my family receiving my degree in Sports Management. Now I am pursuing my second degree in ministry/theology, and I have decided to pursue the career of becoming a minister. The scholarship impacted me so much that I am now telling my sister about it who is applying to colleges now. Overall, this scholarship has helped me and now allows my family to go to college and not worry so much about our financial situation and focus on academics.
As a high school junior at School Without Walls in DC, Tyriek expressed his desire to become a defense attorney because “everyone deserves an opportunity to prove they are innocent”.
“My son, Tyriek was awarded one of the [Masonic Foundation of DC] scholarships in 2013 and here is where he is now. Tyriek is now practicing law as a public defender in Brooklyn, NY. ” Tyriek’s Mom
Thank you for all you do! As a DCPA alumna and former Masonic Scholarship recipient, the scholarship made college a possibility for me, and I know it has done the same for so many other DCPS alumni. Again, thank you!
I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from Miami University (Ohio), where I honed my drawing skills and gained a solid foundation in design principles, which I later brought into my career in footwear design. After graduating, I joined New Balance Headquarters in Boston as a Footwear Concepts Designer.
Thanks to scholarships, like the one I received from the Masonic Foundation, I was fortunate to graduate debt-free. Looking back, this support was invaluable, especially during the pandemic when it allowed me to manage financially through an extended period of unemployment.
Today, I’m still in the footwear industry, working as a freelance designer and artist.
